We helped our friends Keith and Tina of  Retire Early and Travel in planning their trip to India. We recommended they explore Rajasthan and Agra for their ten day trip. They traveled to a combination of mainstream and off-beat places during their time in India.

We recommended they visit the Golden Triangle (Delhi – Jaipur – Agra). Since we also wanted them to experience a bit of the less touristic side of things, we recommended cities like Bikaner and Mandawa. Bikaner is known for it’s proximity to the Thar Desert, and it’s beautifully vibrant narrow lanes. The Junagarh fort is one of the few forts that isn’t built on a hill. Mandawa is another small town not too far from Jaipur in the Shekhawati region.  It’s known for it’s 18th century fort and medieval style Fresco havelis.

Keith and Tina traveled across Rajasthan by car. Traveling by car is a great option because the state is extremely well connected. This allows you the flexibility of making pit-stops to see interesting sights along the way. In terms of the hotels Keith and Tina stayed in a combination of home-stays, hotels and a heritage havelis in Jaipur.

They also visited major cities like Delhi for it’s history and food the capital city has a lot to offer. They also visited by the Taj Mahal and the forts in Agra, before spending some time in the Pink City of Jaipur before flying home. This route makes a lot of sense if you intend to visit the Golden Triangle,  but you also want a bit more from your time in the country.

    Right at the heart of India, and with monuments in every corner of the city, Delhi provides one with the eclectic vibe of India’s rich heritage and culture that the country is so famous for around the world. What makes the capital city a favoured one amongst tourists is also it's close proximity to other tourist hotspots like Jaipur and Agra.

    Mandawa

    The Shekawati region is home to the small town Mandawa, famously known for its Havelis which are palatial mansions from the 19th century built by merchants and the noble society. Mandawa seems like a town stuck in time: simple small town life juxtaposed with gorgeous fresco paintings and intricate architecture.

    Day 6-7

    Bikaner

    Even though Bikaner is used mostly as a stopover between Jaipur and Jaisalmer if one would like to avoid a night train, it has so much more to over: a fantastic fort, dessert outpost vibe as well as the famous and interesting rat temple situated nearby. Furthermore it has great traditional palace hotels one should not miss.

    Day 8-9

    Along with Delhi and Agra, Jaipur is part of the ‘Golden Triangle Tourist circuit of India’. The Rajput Era forts and palaces are a huge part of Rajasthan heritage. The Jaipur City Palace complex, the Nahargarh Fort and the Birla Mandir, are all worth a visit; but the two most illustrious monuments are the Jantar Mantar and Amer Fort.

    Day 10-10

    Agra carries with itself not only a comprehensive history but the entire culture of the Mughal dynasty in India. Places like Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikhri hold their own place in history and culture; but the crown jewel of this city is the magnificent Taj Mahal, one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’.

    Day 11-11
