We planned to book house boat but as we did'nt had much time we booked shikara. It was a 3.5 hours trip in water. It was o beautiful experience. Everywhere there were houses and in the mid of those houses there are house boats and Shikara. If you are planning to visit Kerala then must try house boat if it falls in your budget, if not then Shikara also give the same experience, only the timeperiod is less. But it is also full worth ride
I was planning a trip to Kerala when i was faced a dilemma; whether to stay in a houseboat or hotel. I decided to stay in Hotel primarily to stay away from mosquitoes and sea smell. However when we reached Allepey, my cab driver informed me of the Shikara option. I was immediately tempted to try. It was a three hour ride and we (me and my wife) enjoyed it thoroughly. Three hours initialy seemed a lot of time but we realized that was barely enough. What houseboats do not navigate, shikara does. It takes you among the narrow canals of the backwaters and the amazing colonies around. You get see all scenes including sunset plus the luxury of individual comfort. Well that's my view. But you have an option now to explore.
